Cool,

In Phoenix I use (will use) a different technique. The camera shake is bound to the physics. Almost all objects in a map are linked to physics. The ship really for the most part sits in the middle of the screen and the rest of the map moves below/around it. It's a little like a person standing still and the earth moves under your feet. So to get camera shake all of the objects in view are moved by some variable which effect the dx/dy (velocities) of that object.
